Griffin Hospital Inpatient Psychiatric Unit
The focus of this extensive renovation was improving the quality of patient care at Griffin Hospital. We accomplished this by incorporating the Planetree healthcare model and improving the outdated clinical infrastructure. Upon completion, the 7,300 sq. ft. space conformed to the American Institute of Architects’ guidelines and applicable ADA regulations.
We overcame two major challenges during this project:
-
Only 1 exterior wall was available for patient rooms
-
Stair towers and elevator shafts limited the scope of design
To accommodate the hospital's growing needs for related service areas, we decreased the number of patient beds and replanned the entire space. Our design experts incorporated nature-themed art, natural light, and homey, conventional furnishings and finishes to reduce patient anxiety. The impressive result was a fully functioning psychiatric unit with:
-
Private and semi-private rooms
-
Residential-style kitchen and dining room
-
Entertainment lounge
-
Soothing saltwater aquarium
Notably, the new layout eliminates barriers between patients and staff, creating comfortable spaces that encourage social interaction while continuing to protect patient privacy and ensure safety for all parties.
