Griffin Hospital Inpatient Psychiatric Unit
This extensive renovation was commissioned primarily to improve the quality of patient care by introducing the Planetree health care model used throughout Griffin Hospital and to improve the outdated clinical infrastructure.
At the same time, the entire 7300 s.f. space was upgraded to conform to AIA Health Care Guidelines and applicable ADA regulations.
The process was challenged by two facts: only one exterior/windowed wall was available for patient rooms, and there were significant encumbrances to the space such as elevator shafts, and stair towers. To accommodate the client’s needs for related services areas, the number of patient beds was decreased and the entire space replanned.
Designed with patient comfort in mind, the new unit offers private and semi-private rooms, a residential style kitchen and dining room, an inviting entertainment lounge, and a large saltwater aquarium. It features eliminating barriers between patients and staff where possible; using familiar furnishings and finishes to reduce anxiety; emphasizing nature, natural light and the arts to lift the spirit; creating comfortable public spaces to encourage social interaction and family involvement; and harnessing design and technology to protect patient privacy and enhance patient and staff safety.
