Trailblazers
This project was a 7,100 square foot store overlooking a large man-made rock waterfall and located within the retail component of the Mohegan Sun resort complex. The store is an integral component of the resort’s overall entertainment experience and the tenant standards for each space emphasize the importance of enhancing the consistent, conceptual Native American theme. As such, Trailblazer builds on a dialogue between natural, rough-hewn materials and high-tech equipment used for exploring the outdoors.
To reflect this, Richard Turlington Architects created several rustic, spatial “huts” for display zones, a wrought iron and heavy timber entry portal, and stone display piers set in contrast to a taut, highly polished sales counter, stainless steel cable bracing, display fixtures, and suspended cable lighting. The intentional randomness of the display zones and ceiling planes creates a dynamic layering of space with a simple floor plan configuration. This configuration affords the tenant merchandise flexibility and successfully fits within the resort’s commitment to providing unique entertainment venues.
